COLLEGE STATION — Agricultural producers and rural communities can help the environment through the Texas Country Clean Up Days and Empty Pesticide Container Recycling Collection Days this spring and summer.
Texas County Clean Up Days provide ways to recycle used tires, batteries, used oil, oil filters and pesticide containers.
Agricultural waste pesticides will be collected in Seguin on May 1 and in Batesville on May 4.
Texas producers cooperating in this program for the past three years have disposed of more than 676 tons of hazardous waste, according to Dr. Cliff Hoelscher, entomologist with the Texas Agricultural Extension Service. The program is free to the public.
Texas Country Clean Up Days are scheduled for Elsa, April 10; Raymondville, April 11; La Feria, April 12; Sinton, April 24; George West, April 25; Jourdanton, April 26.
Also, Boerne, May 2; Hondo, May 3; San Saba, May 15; Rosebud, May 17; Giddings, May 18; La Grange, May 19; Groesbeck, May 22; Hillsboro, May 23; Ellis County, May 24; Pilot Point, May 25.

Pesticide container recycling collection only will be conducted at Rio Grande City on April 13, Victoria on April 27, Taylor on May 16, and Etter on Aug. 3. Other materials will not be taken at these locations, Hoelscher said.
During 1994, rural clean up days successfully collected 5,889 batteries, 68,000 pesticide containers, 26,260 tires, 38,013 oil filters and 34,213 gallons of motor oil.
“Recycling waste produces a significant spirit of accomplishment as others join in the program,” he said, adding that all of the disposal operations are free to the public.
The program is sponsored by the Texas Natural Resource Conservation Commission and the Extension Service. For exact times and location, contact a local county Extension agent.
