COLLEGE STATION–The Texas Agricultural Extension Service has named Dr. B.L. Harris as the associate director for agricultural sciences, effective Oct. 1.
Harris currently serves as professor and soils specialist with the Extension Service. He joined the Texas Agricultural Extension Service in 1974 after serving as an Extension soils and land use specialist in Oregon for two years.
“We are extremely pleased to have Dr. Harris join the Extension administration team to give leadership to educational programs in the agricultural sciences,” said Dr. Zerle L. Carpenter, Extension Service director. “He has been an outstanding specialist in soil and water management and has done much in creating effective partnerships with other agencies and organizations to further environmental stewardship efforts.”
Carpenter said that Harris will give leadership to educational programs related to agriculture, natural resources and community development. He also will be a key player in networking with business and industry, other universities, and public and private organizations regarding collaborative efforts to better serve Texas’ agricultural and natural resources industries, Carpenter noted.
Harris has been recognized on numerous occasions at the state and federal level, including the 1994 Governor’s Clean Texas 2000 Award. He was a member of the team that was just named to receive the U.S. Department of Agriculture Honor Award for accomplishments in the area of environmental quality. He has received the Deputy Chancellor’s Award In Excellence and the Superior Service Award presented by the Extension Service.
Harris is a native of Roscoe in Nolan County. He holds B.S. and M.S. degrees from Texas Tech University and a Ph.D. from Oregon State University.
