CORPUS CHRISTI — The 1996 Ranch to Rail South field day will be held May 1 at the Henrietta Kleberg Memorial Museum on 6th Street in Kingsville.
This year’s program will focus on ranch management practices that affect profitability at all levels of the industry.
The program will kick off with registration at 7 a.m. with the general session beginning at 8 a.m. This year, participants will take part in an interactive discussion of four ranch cases detailing feedyard performance, carcass characteristics and financial results, specific industry problems and positive aspects of the cow/calf, stocker/feeder and beef processing levels.
Speakers will review the performance of the current Ranch to Rail South steers on feed at the King Ranch Feedyard and marketing results. Other speakers will cover topics on cow/calf management factors affecting profitability, forces at work in the beef market that affect beef prices, and “Why a $5 Steak Comes From a 60 Cent Steer.” A complimentary lunch will be provided by the Texas Cattle Feeders Association.
During lunch, the King Ranch Feedyard manager and King Ranch veterinarian will review the feedyard performance and health problems encountered in the Ranch to Rail cattle.
After lunch, a panel of industry experts will review the case studies and present possible causes and recommend corrective actions to avoid future problems and potential losses. After the panel discussion, the participants will drive to the feedyard to look at the Ranch to Rail South cattle still on feed. The program ends at 3:30 p.m.
In order to get an accurate court for the luncheon, a RSVP is requested to Dr. Joe Paschal, Extension livestock specialist, telephone (512) 265-9203.
The Ranch to Rail South program is sponsored by the Texas A&M Animal Science Department, the Texas Agricultural Extension Service, King Ranch Inc., and Sam Kane’s Beef Processors.
