COLLEGE STATION — Dr. Chester P. Fehlis, executive associate director of the Texas Agricultural Extension Service, has been elected chairman of the board of directors of the Southern Rural Development Center. He will serve a one-year term.
The center is located on the campus of Mississippi State University and serves the 13 southern states and two territories. It is one of four regional centers that coordinates rural development research and Extension education programs cooperatively with the land- grant institutions, private industry and foundations.
Among educational programs and conferences coordinates by the center are the Champion Communities project, Home-Based and Micro Business Education, Food Processing Industry Competitiveness, Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education, National Tourism Conference, After School Education and Enrichment Model, Rural Health Conference, Welfare Reform and the Fund for Rural America.
Major funding for the four centers comes from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the nation’s land-grant university system and private sources.
