SAN ANTONIO – Six individuals were honored for their contributions as Men of the Year in Texas Agriculture by the Texas County Agricultural Agents Association at their annual meeting last week at the Marriott Rivercenter.
State Sen. Teel Bivins of Amarillo; W.I. Davis of Center; Joe M. Brown of Wichita Falls; Curt Lancaster of San Angelo; Robert Bruner of Huntsville; and James E. Shannon Jr. of Port Lavaca were given the awards.
The members, directors and officers of TCAAA bestow this award annually to six individuals in recognition of their outstanding leadership in agriculture and agribusiness and their support of the county Extension agents of Texas.
Bivins was named one of the “Ten Best Legislators” by Texas Monthly Magazine, representing District 31 in the Texas Panhandle.
Brown is an agricultural journalist and anchor for KFDX-TV 3 serving North Texas and southern Oklahoma.
Davis is director of the Federal Land Bank of Tyler and the Southern Forest Farmers Association.
Lancaster is general manager of VSA Radio Network, a division of Clear Channel Communications and former president of the National Association of Farm Broadcasters.
Bruner is a sixth generation rancher, a member of the clientele advisory committee for the Center for Grazinglands and Ranch Management, advisory director of the Texas Agricultural Lifetime Leadership Program and director of the Texas Forage and Grassland Council.
Shannon Jr. is director of Calhoun Soil and Water Conservation District and board member of the Calhoun County Cattleman’s Association. He recently completed his 32nd year participating in the Calhoun County corn variety testing program.
Following its state meeting, the TCAAA hosted more than 2,000 county Extension agents representing 45 states at the National County Agents Association meeting.
Highlights from the national meeting include a keynote address by Deputy Secretary of Agriculture Richard Rominger; agricultural tours in the Coastal Bend, Winter Garden and the Hill Country; and several professional excellence, distinguished service and achievement awards.
