DALLAS — The aftermath of the ’98 drought and the resulting risk of mycotoxins in feed, primarily aflatoxin, will be a focus of the 1999 Mid-South Ruminant Nutrition Conference.
“We’ve also scheduled several sessions on another important issue —
minerals in dairy nutrition,” said Dr. Ellen Jordan, Extension dairy specialist based in Dallas.
The conference is set for May 6-7 at the Sheraton Grand Hotel at Dallas-Fort Worth Airport. “We’ve planned a comprehensive program aimed at dealing with issues dairy consultants face in the Mid-South, which includes Texas and adjoining states,” said Jordan. “Three sessions will focus on minerals with nationally-known speakers.
“Dr. John Paterson of Montana State will discuss trace minerals in the cow-calf cycle, while Dr. Dwayne Bunting of Louisiana State University follows with sessions on chromium and a survey of ration phosphorus recommendations. In addition, Dr. Bill Sanchez will discuss the use of dietary cation-anion difference in rations.
“Because of the recent drought and reports that drought conditions may persist into 1999, Dr. Lon Whitlow’s two sessions should be of special interest. The first session deals with the characteristics and detection of mycotoxins, and the other addresses toxicity, its treatment and prevention. Dr. Whitlow is on the faculty of North Carolina State.”
The conference is sponsored by the Texas Animal Nutrition Council and the Texas Agricultural Extension Service. Advance registration for the conference is $65 (by April 21) and $75 thereafter. Send registration checks, payable to the Texas Animal Nutrition Council, to Dr. Ellen Jordan, Texas A&M at Dallas, 17360 Coit Road, Dallas, Texas 75252. For more information, phone (972) 952-9210.
