SONORA — The Texas Agricultural Experiment Station’s Annual Angora Goat Performance Test Field Day is set for July 19 at the Sonora Experiment Station. The station is located 28 miles south of Sonora, about half way between Sonora and Rocksprings on U.S. Highway 55.
Due to the continuing depressed adult and yearling mohair market, only 59 animals completed this year’s test. As a result, no public auction is scheduled for this year’s event. Organizers do feel that many of the animals will be available for private sales throughout the day.
The day’s educational program is scheduled from 10 to 11:30 a.m. under the direction of Andy Laughlin, Extension assistant sheep and goat specialist at San Angelo. Speakers and their topics include: “Activity Report of Mohair Council,” Jack Groff, retired sheep and goat specialist, Kerrville; “Current Market Situation,” David Lawford, vice president, Texas International Mohair, Brady; “Variation in Fat and Muscle Measured by Ultrasound,” Dr. Dan Waldron, Texas A&M researcher, San Angelo; and “Test Result Comments,” Dr. Chris Lupton, Texas A&M researcher, San Angelo.
The formal program will conclude with the presentation of the British Mohair Spinner’s Award by the San Angelo-based Mohair Council of America and the recognition of the bucks that certified on the test.
The field day will end with lunch prepared by the Sutton County Steakhouse of Sonora.
