Title: Assistant Editor and Communications Specialist

Basic Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications or related field; master’s degree preferred. Minimum 5 years experience in a communications field; experience in newswriting on daily newspapers preferred. Demonstrated skill in news reporting and writing required; additional skills in media relations and development of marketing materials preferred.. Excellent interpersonal skills required. Ability to speak Spanish, particularly in interview situations with Spanish-language news media, strongly preferred. Skills in basic photography preferred. Some travel necessary. Must have valid driver’s license.
Administrative Relationships: Works under the supervision of the Agricultural Communications unit head or designated supervisor. Works cooperatively with Bexar County Extension director and leadership at the Texas A&M University Agricultural Research and Extension Centers in Uvalde and Corpus Christi. Works cooperatively with other faculty and staff within Agricultural Communications and the Texas A&M University System Agriculture Program.
Major Job Responsibilities: Works with agricultural and consumer science experts to prepare and disseminate news, feature materials and photos that reflect the work of the Texas Agricultural Extension Service and the Texas Agricultural Experiment Station for the people of Texas. Also works with international agriculture elements of Agriculture Program in San Antonio to develop news stories of regional and statewide interest. Develops effective working relationships with print and broadcast media within region and across the state. Advises and plans communications elements of the Agriculture Program’s marketing and public relations efforts. Develops, implements and supports educational programs that increase the communications skills of Agriculture Program faculty. Develops, implements and supports communications elements of major Extension educational programs in region, and advises region’s Agriculture Program leadership on conducting public and media events.
