COLLEGE STATION- Gil Watz of Houston has donated $40,000 to establish ascholarship for students enrolled in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at Texas A&M University.
Watz, who is retired from Mobil Oil, has contributed to two similar scholarships at Texas A&M.
He said he became interested in Texas A&M because he had a very good friend who attended the university. The more Watz learned about the university, the more he wanted to support it.
I like the way A&M handles its business. It does good work and I wanted to do morefor it, Watz said.
Watz is a life member of the Agricultural Development Council, a volunteer group of agricultural and business leaders dedicated to improving educational opportunities for agriculture students.
Dr. Ed Hiler, vice chancellor and dean of the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, said, Gil Watz is committed to serving his community and the youth of this state. This is best characterized by his untiring volunteer service within the Houston community and his continued investment in the youth of this state through endowed college scholarships.
The John P. and Betty L. Keehan Endowed Scholarship, which Watz has established, will be awarded to students on the basis of academic achievement, extra-curricular activities and financial need. – 30 –
