COLLEGE STATION The 30th annual County and District Clerks’ Continuing Education Seminar is set for Jan. 14-17 at the Hilton College Station & Conference Center.
About 400 county officials are expected to attend the event, which is presented each year by the V.G. Young Institute of County Government at Texas A&M a part of Texas Cooperative Extension, The Texas A&M University System in cooperation with the County and District Clerks’ Association of Texas, the Texas Center for the Judiciary Inc., and the Office of Continuing Education, Texas A&M University.
The theme of this year’s seminar is “Unconditional Respect Through Education and Professionalism!” Included will be workshops on such topics as Web page design and development, preparing for the 2002 elections, customer service, courtroom responsibilities, records management, conflict resolution, routes to new jury systems, update on the Legislative Session and child support resolution.
According to John Gilmartin, Extension coordinator with the V.G. Young Institute of County Government and administrative chairman of the event, county and district clerks are required by law to earn 20 continuing education hours over every 24-month period. County officials attending this seminar will each earn 18 hours (1.8 Continuing Education Units or CEUs) awarded by the Office of Continuing Education at A&M.
“Texas is one of a very small number of states that requires all elected county officials to earn continuing education credits,” Gilmartin said. “We provide that service to county commissioners, judges, treasurers, tax assessor-collectors, and county and district clerks here at College Station and across the state.”
