COLLEGE STATION — Dr. David Chalmers will join Texas Cooperative Extension as state turfgrass specialist effective Sept. 1.
Chalmers has served as Extension turfgrass specialist at Virginia Tech University for the past 21 years and holds degrees in turfgrass science from Michigan State University, Virginia Tech and the University of Illinois.
“We are very pleased to bring Dr. Chalmers to Texas Cooperative Extension,” said Dr. Travis Miller, Extension program leader for soil and crop sciences at Texas A&M University. “He has vast talents and experiences in turfgrass and its applications, which he can help the industry and the citizens of Texas make better management decisions in this $6 billion industry.”
Chalmers will have the lead in conducting educational programs and developing publications to address the many issues related to production and maintenance of quality turfgrass, while conserving water in sod fields, sports, commercial and home applications.
He will work with county Extension agents, other research and Extension faculty, local, state and federal agencies and various sectors of the turfgrass industry. Chalmers’ responsibilities also include developing integrated programs to improve turfgrass quality, to provide information to users on varietal and species adaptation to develop programs and better utilize the state’s water resources.
