LUBBOCK Want to find out what’s going on inside your teenager’s brain? Need to help your child deal with a bully? Or how about that “birds and the bees” talk…how do I go about it?
Parents can find the answers to these and other difficult questions at the “Building Strong Families: Tools for Success” parenting conference set for Nov. 7, at the First Church of the Nazarene. The church is at 6110 Chicago Avenue.
The conference is specifically designed for parents, and professionals who work with and counsel parents, in a 20-county area surrounding Lubbock.
The conference will run from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. and feature local, area and state presenters. Attendance typically ranges from 700 to more than 1,200 persons. Concurrent morning and afternoon sessions will cover a variety of family topics with Spanish- and English-language sessions scheduled during each time period.
Morning speakers and sessions will cover topics such as: Competing to Win; Angry and Explosive Children; Your Child’s Brain; Today’s Adolescents; 21st Century Discipline; Diabetes; Accountability of Children and Parents; Grandparenting Today; and Talking to Kids About Sex.
The keynote luncheon speaker will address “Bringing Fatherhood Back to the Family,” from 1 p.m. to 1:45 p.m. Topics for afternoon sessions include: the Truth About Media; Single Parenting; Youth Suicide; Bully-Proof Your Child; Less Than Perfect Relationships; The Seven Wonders of Being a Teenager; and Establishing Excellence in the Family.
Educational exhibits from 30 agencies will showcase local resources for parents and families. Registration costs $5 per person, and includes a continental breakfast and barbecue lunch. The registration deadline is Oct. 28.

The parenting conference was founded by the Lubbock County Partners for Parenting Coalition.
