COLLEGE STATION – Dr. Howard Hesby, professor in the department of animal science at Texas A&M University, received the 2003 Mervin and Annette Peters Advising Award from the University Advisors and Counselors Association at its annual banquet on May 1.
The Peters Advising Award, established in 2000, is awarded each year to one academic advisor at Texas A&M who embodies the spirit of caring, compassion and concern for individual students, according to the UACA web site.
Hesby earned a doctorate from Purdue University. Since joining the department of animal science in 1971, he has taught or advised more than 15,000 students.
He currently teaches several undergraduate animal science and careers courses. He also has taught field study courses in animal production, agribusiness and equine science.
Hesby has received numerous teaching honors, including the Faculty Distinguished Achievement Award in Teaching through the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences and Texas A&M University; College of Agriculture Honor Professor Award, College of Agriculture Innovative Education Award; Agricultural Economics Club Teaching Award; Mortar Board Preferred Professor Award and the Alpha Gamma Rho Teaching Award.
Hesby is a former president of the National Block and Bridle Club and has served as an academic advisor to several student organizations at Texas A&M.
