DENVER – Dr. Konrad Eugster, former associate vice chancellor of agriculture at Texas A&M University in College Station, received two awards at the annual American Veterinary Medical Association meeting July 19 in Denver.
Eugster received the 12th International Veterinary Congress Prize and the K.F. Meyer-James H. Steel Gold Headed Cane Award.
The first award is given to one veterinarian annually in recognition of outstanding contributions to the international understanding of veterinary medicine. The second award is presented annually by the American Veterinary Epidemiology Society for outstanding contributions to the field of veterinary public health.
As the co-project director of the Cooperative State Research, Education and Extension Service Homeland Security grant, Eugster is working on developing surveillance for early-detection of foreign animal diseases, whether they are introduced naturally or by terrorism.
While at Texas A&M, Eugster also directed the five-facility Texas Veterinary Medical Diagnostic Laboratory System, the Texas Racing Commission Drug Testing lab, the Texas Feed and Fertilizer Control Service and the Texas Agricultural Analytical Lab.
He earned his doctor of veterinary medicine degree from Vienna Veterinary College in Austria in 1963, and then earned a doctorate from Colorado State University in 1970.
Eugster is a member of the U.S. Animal Health Association, Texas Veterinary Medical Association and the Conference of Research Workers in Animal Diseases. He is a three-time winner of the President’s Award from the Texas Veterinary Medical Association, and he was named Veterinarian of the Year by the same organization in 1984.
