CROSS PLAINS – Texas Cooperative Extension is sponsoring a special multi-county Forage Seminar Feb. 10 at the Cross Plains Community Center. Registration starts at 8:30 a.m., with the program to follow.
Five Texas Department of Agriculture continuing education units will be offered.
Robert Pritz, county Extension agent for Callahan County and the seminar’s on-site coordinator, said the program’s aim is to provide producers with latest information on forage management strategies.
“We want to help our area’s producers raise uniform, high quality forage to meet their production goals,” he said. “The strategies we’ll discuss will run the gamut from management techniques on winter wheat to selecting the best annual summer forages. We’ ll also be addressing ways to renovate and maximize existing bermudagrass pastures for hay or grazing.”
Seminar speakers and their topics include:
– “Forage Fertility Strategies To Maximize Forage Potential”, Dr. Billy Warrick, Extension agronomist, San Angelo;
– “Forage Insects And Their Control”, Dr. Chris Sansone, Extension entomologist, San Angelo;
– “Understanding Forage Analysis” and “Current Forage Research”, Dr. Twain Butler, Extension agronomist, Stephenville and
– “Summer Forage Utilization By Beef Cattle”, Dr. Ted McCollum, Extension beef specialist, Amarillo.
The program is being presented by the Extension offices in Brown, Callahan, Coleman and Eastland Counties.
The seminar and accompanying meal are free for those pre-registering by Feb. 6. Registration at the door is $5 per person.
