COLLEGE STATION Dr. Jeff Savell, professor in the department of animal science at Texas A&M University, has been given the E. Floyd Forbes Award by the National Meat Association. The award was presented on Feb. 21 at the association’s annual meeting in Las Vegas.
The award is given in recognition of service to the association and to the meat and poultry industry. It is named after the first president of the Western States Meat Packers Association, the current association’s predecessor.
Savell, the E.M. “Manny” Rosenthal chair holder, has been on the faculty of the animal science department since 1977.
“Receiving an award such as the E. Floyd Forbes award is an honor for me,” Savell said. “It helps validate that my service to the university and the meat industry has been important. The E. Floyd Forbes award serves as a capstone recognition,” he said, because it recognizes the contribution of an entire career.
Three others with ties to Texas A&M have received the award since its inception in 1962. They are:
– Dr. Zerle Carpenter, 1979, retired former department head and former director of Texas Cooperative Extension;
– Dr. Russell Cross, 1996, professor and head of the department of animal science from 1983-92 and now associate director of the Texas Agricultural Experiment Station; and
– Dr. Gary Smith, 1999, former department head and now a professor at Colorado State University.
The non-profit association has served the meat industry since 1946.
