COLLEGE STATION - A ranch management workshop for first-time landowners is scheduled April 19-21 in Huntsville.
Sam Houston State University faculty and specialists with Texas Cooperative Extension will discuss a variety of topics as part of the Successful Agricultural Management program.
“This is an intensive workshop that seeks to provide new landowners with basic information regarding the soil-plant-animal interface,” said Dr. Larry Redmon, Extension state forage specialist.
The workshop will begin with an introduction to the basics of beef production, how the cattle market works, rangeland plant species, weed identification and other discussions.
Other topics throughout the workshop will include soil sampling and nutrient management, body condition scoring of cattle, animal handling techniques, pasture management and grazing systems, livestock marketing, hay production and forage testing, beef cattle selection, and white tail deer management.
A barbecue dinner is scheduled for April 19 and steak dinner on April 20 — upon conclusion of the day’s events at the Gibbs ranch.
