CHEVY CHASE, Md. Two representatives of Texas Eligio “Kika” de la Garza and Dr. Edward F. Schlutt were among the 20 individuals recently inducted into the National 4-H Hall of Fame. The ceremony was on Oct. 6 at the National 4-H Youth Conference Center in Chevy Chase. Honorees were cited for their contributions to 4-H and its members.
“This year’s National 4-H Hall of Fame laureates have impacted millions of 4-H youth, leading by example with their passion, dedication and creativity, and helping to build strong leaders and citizens,” said Lisa Lauxman, president of the National Association of Extension 4-H Agents. “We are proud to celebrate their contributions by welcoming these inspirational people into the 4-H Hall of Fame.”
The 2006 laureates and their states or nominators are: W.C. Abbott Sr., Louisiana; Oliver Anderson, Arizona; Thomas Carlton Blalock, North Carolina; I.B. “Tubby” Boggs, West Virginia; Dr. G.L.M. (Monty) Chappell, Kentucky; Maynard H. Coe, Kansas; Dolly Dwyer, Montana; Max V. Exner, Iowa; Eligio “Kika” de la Garza, National 4-H Council and National 4-H Headquarters; Shirley Ann Geis, Maryland; Lizzie Arabella Jenkins, Virginia; Ralph E. Kirch, National 4-H Council; Martha Jo Tolley, Tennessee; Marion S. MacDonald, Delaware; Otis Samuel O’Neal, Georgia; David Pace, Minnesota; Ray Parker, Oklahoma; Dr. Edward F. Schlutt, Texas; Andy Smyth, Idaho; and Edgar Reeves Jr., National 4-H Headquarters.
Candidates were nominated by the National Association of Extension 4-H Agents, National 4-H Headquarters at the U.S. Department of Agriculture; National 4-H Council and state 4-H programs.
The National 4-H Hall of Fame was established in 2002 by the national agents’ association in partnership with National 4-H Council and Families, 4-H and Nutrition, a division of the Cooperative State Research, Education and Extension Service of the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
