ETTER – Area landowners will get a chance to view six warm-season grasses planted under dryland, limited and full irrigation at a Perennial Grass Field Day on Aug. 25 at the Texas AgriLife Research North Plains Research Field, 6045 W Road E, north of Dumas.
The program begins at 10 a.m., and those attending will be able to walk through field trials of blue grama, Old World bluestem, buffalo grass, Bermuda grass, sideoats grama and switchgrass, said Dr. Brent Bean, Texas AgriLife Extension Service agronomist.
Yield, nutritive value to livestock and water-use efficiency of each grass will be discussed, Bean said, as well as other topics related to grass production and cattle grazing.
Speakers and their topics are:
— Dr. Brent Bean, AgriLife Extension agronomist from Amarillo; overview of two years of research with the warm-season grasses under dryland and irrigated conditions.
— Dr. Dariusz Malinowski, Texas AgriLife Research forage agronomist from Vernon; cool-season grasses under limited-irrigation conditions.
— Dr. Larry Redmon, AgriLife Extension state forage specialist from College Station; grass varieties and their adaptability to the Texas Panhandle.
— Dr. Ted McCollum, AgriLife Extension beef cattle specialist from Amarillo; grass management strategies.
