AUSTIN – “A Passion for Plants: An East Austin Garden Fair” will take place from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. March 20 at Govalle Park, 5200 Bolm Road, Austin.
“Gardening the Earth-Kind Way” will be the theme of this year’s event, which is free and open to the public. It will feature more than 30 informational booths and displays with activities and information for both novice and experienced gardeners.
“Earth-Kind is a registered trademark of the Texas AgriLife Extension Service,” said Daphne Richards, AgriLife Extension agent for horticulture in Travis County. “Earth-Kind landscaping uses research-proven techniques of both traditional and organic gardening to provide maximum aesthetic enjoyment while protecting the environment.”
Richards said in keeping with this year’s theme, fair presentations will emphasize landscaping for water and energy conservation, proper fertilizer and pesticide use, and reducing landscaping waste.
“Attendees receive free information from community organizations and free gardening advice, as well as a free starter plant while supplies last,” she said. “They will also be introduced to volunteer opportunities for reaching out and making a difference in the community.”
Hands-on demonstrations at the fair will include digging a garden bed, composting, rainwater harvesting, growing fruits and vegetables organically, creating food and shelter for wildlife, starting plants from seeds and cuttings, and reducing chemical use in gardening.
“Horticulture experts will be on site to answer questions on gardening topics, and there will be fun and educational activities for kids too,” Richards said.
The fair is hosted by the Travis County Master Gardeners Association, AgriLife Extension, Sustainable Food Center, Green Corn Project and Holistic Education and Health Network.
