SAN ANTONIO –Two summer-foods Backyard Basics programs will be presented Aug. 1 at the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service offices for Bexar County, Suite 208 of the Conroy Square office complex, 3355 Cherry Ridge Drive in San Antonio.
The first will be a morning program called “Canning and Jamming Summer Fruits,” to be held from 9 a.m.- noon. The second, an evening program called “Perfect Pickles,” will be presented from 6:30-8:30 p.m.
“The morning program will focus on making jam from summer fruits and then preserving them,” said Dr. Connie Sheppard, AgriLife Extension agent for family and consumer sciences, Bexar County. “We’ll be showing attendees how to can and freeze as ways to preserve their foods.”
Sheppard said the evening program will focus not only on making pickles, but also on the art of pickling.
“While we’ll devote attention to creating the perfect pickle, attendees at this program will also learn how to pickle other vegetables, such as beans, carrots, cauliflower and squash,” she said.
Each program is $15 per person. To register and for more information, contact Annette Pawelek at 210-467-6575.
Sheppard said these and other Backyard Basics programs are being presented in several counties in South Central Texas in response to an increasing interest in producing, preparing and preserving homemade and homegrown foods.
