SEGUIN – A Geronimo and Alligator Creeks Watershed Partnership meeting will be held Jan. 14 at the Guadalupe-Blanco River Authority’s River Annex located at 905 Nolan St. in Seguin.
The meeting is presented by the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service and the river authority in conjunction with the Texas State Soil and Water Conservation Board.
Refreshments will be available at 5:30 p.m., with the meeting to begin at 6 p.m. After a welcome and introduction by Debbie Magin of the Guadalupe-Blanco River Authority, meeting topics and speakers will be:
— Texas Parks & Wildlife Department Mussel Watch Program, Marsha May, Texas Parks & Wildlife Department biologist, Austin.
— Latest Water Quality Data Summary of Geronimo Creek, Lee Gudgell, Guadalupe-Blanco River Authority water quality technician, Seguin.
— Isotope Study on Origin of Nitrates in Groundwater, Rebecca Lambert, U. S. Geological Survey hydrologist, Helotes.
“The TPWD Mussel Watch Program presentation will be particularly interesting to folks that live and play along Geronimo and Alligator creeks or any creek in Texas for that matter,” said Ward Ling, Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service program specialist, College Station. “Residents can be directly involved in that program.”
Ling added that the nitrates isotope study has been something that the river authority has been looking to partner on with U.S. Geological Survey for some time.
“Gaining insight to the origin of the elevated nitrates in groundwater will assist us as we work to lower concentrations in surface water,” Ling said. “And for those interested in the most current water quality data from Geronimo Creek, this would be a meeting you don’t want to miss. It will include information on the latest on creek sampling data collected by the river authority.”
The meeting also will include a planning discussion for the Annual Creek Cleanup Event on April 5, as well as implementation updates and announcements relating to the Feral Hog Workshop May 23 and the Nonpoint Education for Municipal Officials Workshop March 25.
