SAN ANTONIO — The Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service office for Bexar County will host the “Alamo Area Water and Land Stewardship – Class Day” from 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m. April 3 in San Antonio.
The program will be held in the AgriLife Extension office, Suite 208 of the Conroy Square business complex, located at 3355 Cherry Ridge Drive.
Three Texas Department of Agriculture continuing education units – two general and one integrated pest management – are available to licensed applicators who attend.
Registration will be from 8:30– 9 a.m., with snacks and beverages provided.
The program begins at 9 a.m. with an introduction and the presentation “Private Lands: Current State and Increasing Importance” by Jared Beaver, AgriLife Extension program coordinator for water and natural resources, Bexar County.
Additional morning topics and presenters will be:
— Benefits of Wildlife Tax Valuation; and Goal and Plan Development: Realistic Expectations, Jessica Alderson, Texas Parks and Wildlife Department urban biologist.
— State and Federal Incentive Options, Arlene Kalmback, Texas Parks and Wildlife Department landowner incentive coordinator, and Carolyn Vogel, Texas Conservation Connection/Hill Country Land Trust.
Lunch, which is included in the registration cost, will be from noon–1 p.m.
Afternoon topics and presenters will be:
— Private Water Well Basics: Ownership, Construction and Water Quantity, Dr. Diane Boellstorff, AgriLife Extension water resource specialist.
— Feral Hogs and Water Quality, Mike Marshall, Texas A&M Institute of Renewable Natural Resources and AgriLife Extension associate.
— Basic Pond Ecology and Management, Dr. Todd Sink, department of wildlife and fisheries sciences assistant professor, AgriLife Extension fisheries specialist.
Registration is $25 and space is limited to the first 50 participants who RSVP to Angel Torres at the AgriLife Extension office, 210-467-6575. The deadline to RSVP is April 1.
Beaver said those registering for both the Water and Land Stewardship Program on April 3 and associated Alamo Area Water and Land Stewardship Field Demo Day on April 17, which would normally cost $35, can attend both for the discounted price of $50.
The field demonstration day will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. on April 17. The program will include presentations and demonstrations on natural resource management, brush removal, watersheds, proper fence construction for livestock and wildlife, private well management and rainwater harvesting. It offers three TDA continuing education units – two general and one integrated pest management.
