Providers, parents will learn advocacy strategies

AMARILLO – The Military Families Learning Network’s Military Caregiving program will host a Feb. 28 Department of Defense webinar, “How Providers Can Support Advocacy and Leadership in Parents of Children with Disabilities.”
This and other webinars are offered through Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service’s Military Program to provide professional development and interactive resources for those unable to leave home for training, said Andrew Crocker, AgriLife Extension program specialist in gerontology and health, Amarillo.
The one-hour webinar will begin at 11 a.m. and is free and open to anyone interested, but registration is required. To join the session or for more information, go to https://learn.extension.org/events/3278.
“Participants will learn about the strategies parents use in successful advocacy efforts, as well as how the parenting and advocacy journey shifts as children grow,” said Rachel Brauner, program coordinator with the agency’s Texas Military Program in College Station.
Dr. Sarah Taylor, professor at California State University, will provide the interactive webinar tailored to providers who work with parents of children with disabilities.
“Dr. Taylor will share insights from her research on advocacy with over 300 parents of children with disabilities, as well as her personal experiences in advocating for her 11-year-old son with fragile X syndrome,” Brauner said.
The MFLN Military Caregiving concentration will provide certificates of completion for participants interested in receiving training hours and one continuing education credit from the University of Texas School of Social Work.
