The 60th annual Soil Survey and Land Resource Workshop will be held Feb. 8-9 at the Best Western Premier, 1920 Austin’s Colony Parkway, Bryan.

The Soil Survey and Land Resource Workshop is an annual conference for Texas soil scientists to share updates on research and policy, to discuss past and future priorities, and to communicate with relevant state and federal agencies, said Jake Mowrer, Ph.D., event co-coordinator and Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service state soil specialist, Bryan-College Station.
The workshop is organized each year by AgriLife Extension and Texas A&M AgriLife Research, along with the U.S. Department of Agriculture Natural Resources Conservation Service, USDA NRCS, Texas state office, with cooperation from the Professional Soil Scientists Association of Texas, PSSAT.
Registration for this year’s conference is now open at https://tx.ag/soilsurveyworkshop. Registration fees are $135 by Jan. 24 and $150 after that. Student registration is $25 by Jan. 24 and $35 after that.
On the agenda
Many faculty and students from the Texas A&M College of Agriculture and Life Sciences Department of Soil and Crop Sciences will speak at the workshop.
On Feb. 8, the program will open with a panel discussion of the highlights of the National Cooperative Soil Survey in Texas, with Mowrer joining the following panelists:
— Jo Parsley, soil survey regional director, South Central Region, USDA NRCS.
— David Lindbo, Ph.D., director, Soil and Plant Science Division, USDA NRCS.
— Julie Howe, Ph.D., soil chemistry and fertility professor, AgriLife Research and Department of Soil and Crop Sciences.
— Alan Stahnke, state soil scientist, USDA NRCS.
The panel discussion will be followed by an update on the National Soil Survey Center, along with updates from PSSAT, the Texas Board of Professional Geoscientists and the Soil Health Institute.
Student presentations and an early career panel will fill out the first afternoon session before the poster session opens, and an awards celebration will conclude the first day.
On Feb. 9, the program will feature special sessions on “Applications of Soil Survey,” “Climate Smart Projects in Texas” and “Soil Cycles” along with the student research poster and oral presentation competitions. All speakers and topics can be found on the 2023 SSLRW Program.
