The Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service will offer a homeowner education event Feb. 22 in Meridian covering the operation and maintenance of aerobic treatment units.
The “Homeowner Maintenance of Aerobic Treatment Units” workshop will be held from 8:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. at the Meridian Civic Center, 309 W. River St.
Cost is $150 if registered by Feb. 8 or $170 after that date. Participants should register at https://tx.ag/Feb22AerobicMaintenance. Registration closes Feb. 15.
The registration fee includes training materials and a certificate of completion. There will be an hour lunch break, but lunch is not included in the event so participants should plan accordingly.
“This course covers the components of an aerobic treatment unit and spray field,” said Chelsea Dorward, AgriLife Extension agriculture and natural resources agent, Bosque County. “It is important for homeowners to properly maintain their onsite wastewater treatment systems to help protect public safety, public health and water quality.”
Aerobic system topics
The course presentations will provide a basic understanding of the operational and maintenance activities for an aerobic treatment unit, Dorward said, including hands-on demonstration of evaluation techniques to determine operational status of the treatment system.
Other topics covered will include:
- The importance of maintaining an on-site wastewater treatment system.
- Health and safety considerations.
- Basic concepts about the aerobic treatment processes.
- Testing and reporting on the status of the treatment system.
- Care and feeding of the aerobic treatment unit.
- Tools for evaluating the system.
“The participants will leave this class with a better understanding of the practices required to keep their system working and limit interference with the enjoyment of their property,” she said.
