The Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service will host a Spanish-language Zoom webinar for agriculture workers on July 30 at 10 a.m. focused on New World screwworm.
The online event will cover basic biology, inspection and treatment related to livestock and wildlife management as the agency continues its mission of reaching all Texans with statewide educational programming.
“Understanding the New World screwworm as well as how to prepare and respond are at the forefront of many ranch and wildlife operations across South Texas and statewide,” said Dan Hale, Ph.D., AgriLife Extension association director for agriculture and natural resources and professor in the Department of Animal Science, Bryan-College Station.

The following are scheduled speakers:
- The life cycle of New World screwworm – entomology basics, Julio Bernal, Ph.D,, professor in the Texas A&M Department of Entomology, Bryan-College Station.
- New World screwworm and cattle management, Rogelio Mercado, AgriLife Extension agent for agriculture and natural resources, Jim Wells County.
- Wildlife aspects of New World screwworm, Silverio Avila, Ph.D., AgriLife Extension range specialist and assistant professor in the Department of Rangeland, Wildlife and Fisheries Management, Alpine.
- Permitting livestock to move from infested zones –Texas Animal Health Commission, Eli Benavidez, region manager, Texas Animal Health Commission, Rio Hondo.
