Texas A&M entomologist Robert Coulson retires after 55-year career
Pioneering entomologist shaped forest science, modeling and generations of students
After 55 years with Texas A&M University, Robert Coulson, Ph.D., is retiring with a legacy that stretches across generations of students, groundbreaking ecological research and scientific innovation that was decades ahead of its time.
Coulson joined Texas A&M in 1970 as the principal entomologist with the Texas A&M Forest Service and assistant professor at the Texas Agricultural Experiment Station, now Texas A&M AgriLife Research, at Lufkin. He later received an academic appointment with the Texas A&M Department of Entomology, where he is now a professor.
He partnered with Thomas Payne, Ph.D., who also joined the Department of Entomology as a forest entomologist. Together they formed a strong research collaboration to address the southern pine beetle, which was an established threat to the Texas forest industry.
Over the next five and a half decades, Coulson became internationally recognized for his work on the southern pine beetle, research in forest entomology, insect ecology and landscape science.

Ray Frisbie, Ph.D., professor emeritus and head of the Department of Entomology from 1994-2004, was in the department for 31 years. He said Coulson’s work shaped the future of ecological modeling and decision-support systems that influenced both forest management and monitoring of invasive insects.
“Dr. Coulson pushed the boundaries of entomological and ecosystem sciences and encouraged collaboration across disciplines,” Frisbie said. “He helped researchers think bigger about how science could be applied to real-world environmental challenges.”
Leading-edge research foundation for a new field
Throughout his career in the Department of Entomology, Coulson studied the complex relationships between insects and other organisms in forests, prairies, savanna and urban landscapes.
These investigations included the southern pine beetle, Africanized honeybees, fire ants, monarch butterflies and other organisms. His research helped scientists and land managers better understand how insect populations interact with changing environmental conditions across large landscapes.
Coulson’s greatest strength was the ability to identify significant entomology research issues, secure resources to investigate them and assemble teams of students, technicians and colleagues capable of solving multidisciplinary problems.

In 1984, Coulson co-founded the Knowledge Engineering Laboratory, an interdisciplinary effort that combined ecological science, computing and systems analysis to improve environmental and land management decision-making.
Long before today’s artificial intelligence and ecological informatics became widely discussed fields, Coulson and collaborators were developing tools to integrate scientific data, expert knowledge and landscape-level modeling. His work anticipated many of the interdisciplinary, data-driven approaches that underpin today’s environmental modeling and decision-support technologies.
“It was exciting to be on the leading edge of combining disciplines like ecology, forest management, entomology and data modeling,” Coulson said. “To be a part of that evolution in scientific disciplines, find impactful solutions for producers and the industry, and to do that alongside so many great colleagues, my career has been a marvelous adventure.”
Committed to the land-grant mission
Over his career, Coulson authored or co-authored more than 140 peer-reviewed publications and several influential books, including works focused on forest entomology and landscape ecology. His work helped establish foundational concepts still used by researchers and natural resource professionals today.
Coulson also made a lasting impact in the classroom and through mentorship. Many of the scientists he mentored now work in academia, government agencies and private industry across the country.
His contributions earned numerous professional honors, including recognition as a Fellow of the Entomological Society of America.
Coulson continued pursuing applied research at the nexus of entomology and landscape ecology, including collaborative work examining ways to reduce monarch butterfly mortality along Texas highways. He has also worked closely with Texas honeybee programs, including AgriLife Research’s Texas Apiary Inspection Service.
“This university has always been great about collaborative research, and being in a land-grant institution keeps the mission simple,” he said. “My goal from the beginning was to build programs and partnerships that generated practical guidance and solutions for the stakeholders we serve.”
