Texas A&M students honor Avery Detten ’28 with scholarship
College of Agriculture and Life Sciences Student Council rallies to raise $15,000 for endowed scholarship

When members of the Texas A&M College of Agriculture and Life Sciences Student Council lost their friend and fellow council member, Avery Detten ’28, this summer, they wanted to find a way to honor a friend who had become more like family.
Detten, an animal science major from Hereford, had just been selected to serve on the council when she passed away in May. She was also a member of Texas A&M’s national champion Wool Judging Team in 2025 and the 2026 Meat Judging Team, and she worked as a student assistant in the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service meat specialists’ office.
Honoring Avery’s legacy
In the weeks following Detten’s death, council members raised $15,000 to launch the Avery Detten ’28 Memorial Endowed Scholarship, with a goal of growing the fund to $25,000 over the next five years. Once fully funded, the endowment will provide scholarships to full-time College of Agriculture and Life Sciences undergraduate students chosen for their academic achievement and involvement outside the classroom.
Blake Koether ’27, council president, said the group wanted to find a meaningful way to ensure Detten’s impact on the College did not end with her passing.
“Avery was an incredibly kind person who made those around her feel valued, welcomed and cared for,” Koether said. “Establishing a scholarship endowment in her name allows her legacy to continue through future students in the College. Our hope is that for years to come, this scholarship will serve as a reminder of the kind person Avery was and the lasting difference one person can make in the lives of others.”
Jeffrey W. Savell, Ph.D., vice chancellor and dean for Agriculture and Life Sciences, said the student-led effort reflects the sense of family that runs deep within the College.
“Family is at the heart of everything we do in this College, and Avery was very much a part of that family,” Savell said. “It is truly special to see the council come together this way, turning their grief into something that will support students and honor Avery’s impact on all of us.”
