Pond fisheries management workshop scheduled for Oct. 3 in Saint Jo
Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service event to cover pond development, fisheries management
The Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service will host Pond Fisheries Management 101 on Oct. 3 from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. in Saint Jo.

The event will be held at West Haven Ranch, 2290 Ivins Road. Registration is $40 and includes lunch. Registration is available by calling the AgriLife Extension office for Montague County at 940-894-2831 or emailing Justin Hansard, AgriLife Extension county agent for Montague County, at [email protected]. “West Haven Ranch has developed an outstanding private fishery from the ground up,” Hansard said. “From fish surveys to forage and water quality, they actively manage their pond to build the dream of a perfect bass.”
Event to cover pond management from the soil up
Hansard said the event will provide participants with key information needed to develop and manage a successful private fishery.
Topics and speakers include:
- Identifying the ideal pond location based on soil type and drainage – U.S. Department of Agriculture Natural Resources Conservation Service.
- Steps for pond planning and construction – Otto’s Dirt Service.
- Factors needed for a healthy fishery – Bob Lusk, fisheries biologist and editor of Pond Boss magazine.
- Pond management techniques, including electrofishing surveys – Tyson Keese, AgriLife Extension pond management specialist, Texas A&M Department of Rangeland, Wildlife and Fisheries Management, Overton.
