Central Texas Small Grain Field Day slated for April 22 in McGregor
AgriLife Extension event offers expert speakers, hands-on tours, continuing education
The Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service will host its Central Texas Small Grain Field Day on April 22 from 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. in McGregor.

The event cost, which includes breakfast and lunch, is $10. To register, call the AgriLife Extension office for McLennan County at 254-757-5180. On-site registration is also available beginning at 7:30 a.m. at the Kevin Huffman Field wheat plots located at Smith Road, on the north side of U.S. Highway 84, McGregor.
Following the first morning session, the event will move to the Texas A&M AgriLife Research McGregor Research Station, 773 Ag Farm Road.
Three Texas Department of Agriculture continuing education units — two integrated pest management and one general — will be available. Four-and-a-half certified crop adviser units are also available.

The conference will feature the following topics and speakers:
- Small grain variety tour — Brandon Gerrish, Ph.D., AgriLife Extension agronomist and assistant professor, Department of Soil and Crop Sciences, Bryan-College Station.
- Small grain insect scouting report — Mark Nemec, MJN Consulting, Woodway.
- Commodity market update — Jason Johnson, Ph.D., AgriLife Extension economist and associate professor, Department of Agricultural Economics, Bryan-College Station.
- Nitrogen fertilization of wheat and soil testing — Calvin Trostle, Ph.D., AgriLife Extension state hemp and alternative crops specialist and professor, Department of Soil and Crop Sciences, Lubbock.
- Tour of Hessian fly and fungicide research at McGregor Research Center — Tyler Mays, AgriLife Extension integrated pest management agent, Hillsboro; Gerrish and Trostle.
