Child passenger safety courses set for May 13-15 in Athens, Cameron, Hallsville
Free accredited training offered for law enforcement and others who work with children in cars
The Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service Passenger Safety KidSafe Initiatives program will offer Operation Kids: Child Passenger Safety for Law Enforcement courses in Athens, Cameron and Hallsville, May 12-15.
The free, four-hour accredited course by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement, TCOLE, is designed for law enforcement officers and others who work around children in cars. It provides a foundational knowledge of child passenger safety during traffic stops and other encounters. The course is taught by certified Child Passenger Safety Technicians, instructors and TCOLE instructors.
Registration is free but required at each location using the details below.
Athens session — Henderson County
One session will be held from 1-5 p.m. on May 12 at the Athens Police Department Multipurpose Room, 607 N. Pinkerton St., Athens. Cameron sessions — Milam County
Two sessions – from 8 a.m. to noon and 1-5 p.m. – will be held on May 13 at the Milam County Main Annex Conference Room, 806 N. Crockett Ave., Cameron.

Two sessions will be held at Hallsville City Hall Council Chambers, 201 Willow St., Hallsville. The sessions will be May 14, 1-5 p.m., and May 15, 8 a.m. to noon.

About the course
Topics covered include Texas laws on car seats and seat belts; the most common car seat misuses and how to correct them; basic types of car seats and how to recognize and operate each; basic types of seat belts and Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children, LATCH, systems; and videos covering car seat installation and actual traffic stops.
