The Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service will hold a four-part virtual advanced entomology series focusing on insect identification on Aug. 5, Aug. 12, Aug. 19 and Aug. 26.

The course consists of four, two-hour classes, held via Zoom from 1-3 p.m. each Tuesday in August. The cost for the series is $40, and registration is available by visiting https://tx.ag/ENTOShortCourse. It is highly recommended that participants complete the basics class before enrolling in the advanced session. 

About the course

The course will focus on the most common insect families, and participants will learn to identify insects to the family level, with some groups explored at the subfamily, genus and species levels. 

Butterfly and moth sessions will also include adult and larval stages. 

Topics include: 

  • Butterflies: Nymphalidae, Papilionidae, Lycaenidae, Pieridae and Hesperiidae. 
  • Moths: Saturniidae, Sphingidae, Erebidae, Noctuidae and Lasiocampidae. 
  • Flies: Syrphidae, Culicidae, Dolichopodidae, Muscidae, Bombyliidae, Asilidae and Calliphoridae. 
  • Bees: Apidae, Halictidae and Megachilidae — includes subfamilies.
