The Oldham County Stocker Cattle Conference will be held on July 14 at the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service office for Oldham County, 304 Vega Blvd., Vega.

The cost is $50 for early registration by June 15 and $75 after. Youth, who must be accompanied by an adult, can register early for $40 or pay $50 for late registration. Lunch and an evening meal will be included. Register online at tx.ag/OldhamCountySCC or call 806-639-2180.

The program begins at 9 a.m. with check-in and will conclude at 7 p.m.

This event will dive into the most important topics shaping today’s stocker industry, including cattle health, evolving stocker environments, feed supplementation and cattle market outlooks, said Mason Carter, AgriLife Extension agriculture and natural resources agent for Hemphill County.

The lunchtime keynote speaker will be Mark Gardiner, president of Gardiner Angus Ranch, a family-owned, generational beef operation located in Ashland, Kansas, who will provide industry insight and talk about real-world experience.

On the agenda

Providing relevant information for stocker cattle operators and feeder cattle operators, the conference will focus on:

  • Necropsy and the Beef Quality Assurance program – Jacques Fuselier, DVM, manager cattle technical services, Merck Animal Health, and Jason Smith, Ph.D., AgriLife Extension beef cattle specialist and associate professor, Texas A&M Department of Animal Science, Canyon.
  • Antibiotic Selection in Bovine Respiratory Disease, BRD – Fuselier.
  • Beef-on-Dairy vs Ranch Calf Stockers – Logan Thompson, Ph.D., Extension sustainable grazing systems specialist and assistant professor, Kansas State University.
  • Supplementation of Stocker Cattle – Paul Beck, Ph.D., Extension specialist for beef nutrition and professor, Oklahoma State University.
  • Financial/Risk Management/Market Outlook — Amanda Fuller, Ph.D., business and risk management consultant, Compass Ag Solutions/Oldham County Ag Committee, Hereford; Will Durrett, manager, Durrett Cattle Co., Amarillo; Colton Long, senior market president of agribusiness lending, AgTexas, Amarillo; U.S. Department of Agriculture Chief Economist Justin Benavidez, Ph.D., Washington, D.C.
