March 18 webinar to address ethical, legal complexities of guardianships
Event to focus on strategies for minimizing ethical risk, protecting patient rights
The Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service and OneOp will host the webinar, “Key Ethical Implications of Substitute Decision-Making and Guardianship” on March 18 from 10-11:30 a.m.

There is no cost to attend, but participants are required to register at tx.ag/March18OneOpWebinar. Once registered, an email will be sent with connection information.
The webinar is designed to provide healthcare professionals across disciplines with thoughtful and ethical approaches to substitute or supported decision-making and guardianship that arise when patients are unable to provide informed consent due to impaired or fluctuating decision-making capacity.
Event speakers include Lorna Lee-Riley, licensed clinical social worker and director of education and industry relations for the Commission for Case Manager Certification, and Robert Franklin, Ph.D., certified employee assistance professional and approved clinical supervisor with the Defense Intelligence Agency.
Learning objectives
The webinar will provide an in-depth examination of the ethical, legal and clinical complexities of supported decision-making and guardianship while highlighting strategies to minimize ethical risk and protect patient rights.
Following the webinar, participants will be able to:
- Define decision-making capacity, informed consent, substitute decision-making, supported decision-making and guardianship.
- Differentiate between various types of surrogate decision-makers and court-appointed guardians.
- Explain the ethical principles that guide practice when working with individuals unable to consent.
- Apply ethical decision-making frameworks to real-world scenarios involving vulnerable adults or dependents who lack capacity.
