Pecan field day slated for April 7 in Waco
AgriLife Extension event to cover variety selection, orchard pest management and grafting topics
The Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service will host a Pecan Field Day from 8:30 a.m.-noon on April 7 at Russell’s Pecan Orchard, 12633 Gholson Road, Waco.

The cost is $25 and includes both breakfast and lunch. Registration is required by April 3 by contacting the AgriLife Extension office in McLennan County at 254-757-5180.
The event offers two integrated pest management continuing education units for current Texas Department of Agriculture pesticide license holders who attend the program.
The McLennan County Master Gardeners will provide breakfast. Bubs BBQ and Burgers will provide lunch. Attendees are encouraged to bring their own lawn chair.
Pecan orchard management topics covered
Monte Nesbitt, Ph.D., AgriLife Extension pecan specialist and associate professor in the Texas A&M Department of Horticultural Sciences, Bryan-College Station, and Kyle Slusher, Ph.D., AgriLife Extension entomologist and assistant professor in the Texas A&M Department of Entomology, Stephenville, will provide the educational presentations.
Topics and speakers include:
- Pecan grafting: tools, methods and live demonstrations — Nesbitt.
- Pecan variety overview — Nesbitt.
- Orchard pest identification and management — Slusher.
- Understanding insecticide use and alternative applications — Slusher.
Attendees will have the opportunity to view live grafting demonstrations and tour the orchard.
