Webinar to explore service animal laws and disability accommodations
Program available beginning Aug. 3 will aid understanding of rights when the law gets ‘ruff’
The Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service and OneOp will host a prerecorded webinar for professionals seeking a clearer understanding of service animal laws and disability accommodations beginning Aug. 3.
The webinar will be available online at: https://oneop.org/learn/160152. The program can be viewed at any time after Aug. 3 with no registration or fee required.
The 1.5-hour webinar will examine federal laws governing service animals in a variety of settings, including workplaces, housing, schools, healthcare facilities, restaurants, transportation and other public accommodations.
The webinar will focus on the legal rights and responsibilities surrounding service animals, emotional support animals and assistance animals.
About the webinar
Participants will gain practical knowledge of the Americans with Disabilities Act, ADA; Fair Housing Act, FHA; Air Carrier Access Act, ACAA; Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act and applicable state laws. Through real-world examples and recent legal cases, the session will address common misconceptions, permissible questions, direct threat considerations, service animals in training and best practices for handling accommodation requests.
The webinar is designed for professionals working in education, healthcare, housing, disability services, human resources, law enforcement, transportation, hospitality and community-based organizations who want to strengthen their understanding of disability rights and service animal accommodations.
The webinar is pending approval for 1.5 continuing education credits for several professional certifications, including:
- Board‑certified patient advocates.
- Certified in family and consumer sciences.
- Board‑certified case managers.
- Board‑certified disability management specialists.
- Certified family life educators.
- Certified health education specialists and master certified health education specialists.
- Social workers, licensed professional counselors, and licensed marriage and family therapists through the University of Texas School of Social Work.
Eligibility periods for continuing education credits vary by credential. OneOp certificates of attendance will also be available for participants seeking documentation of professional development.
