Predation prevention

The field day is part of AgriLife Extension’s ongoing effort to help producers adopt the practice of keeping livestock guardian dogs to deter predation, said Bill Costanzo, AgriLife Extension livestock guardian dog program specialist, Texas A&M Department of Animal Science, College Station.

“The biggest single loss in sheep and goat production is predation,” said Jake Thorne, Ph.D., AgriLife Extension sheep and goat specialist and assistant professor, Department of Animal Science, San Angelo. “The problem is not going away, and, in many areas, it’s increasing.”

Thorne said the field day would benefit all LGD owners, but especially those with little or no dog-handling experience.
