The Texas Water Resources Institute, TWRI, will host a stakeholder meeting for the Thompsons Creek Watershed Partnership on June 17 in Bryan.

The meeting will start at 2:30 p.m. at the Brazos Center, 3232 Briarcrest Drive.

Anyone with an interest in the watershed can become a member of the partnership by participating in meetings and the development of the watershed protection plan, WPP.

The meeting will provide an overview of the project and a review of draft Chapters 1-4. In addition, a newly completed draft of Chapter 5 will be presented. This chapter provides information about the pollutant load reductions required to meet water quality standards, as well as the results from spatial analysis of potential bacteria sources identified in Chapter 4.

“The plan will outline strategies that can improve local water quality,” said Ward Ling, TWRI program specialist, Bryan-College Station.

Improving local water quality

This partnership serves as the forum for public input, which is driving the development of a voluntary, stakeholder-driven WPP for the Thompsons Creek watershed.

The Brazos River Authority and TWRI collected water samples from Thompsons Creek, Still Creek and Cottonwood Branch that confirmed the presence of bacteria concentrations above the applicable standard for recreational activities that may involve accidental water ingestion. Waters not meeting an applicable water quality standard are considered impaired. Once impaired, action is required to restore water quality.

Funding for developing the WPP for the Thompsons Creek watershed is provided in part by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency through a Clean Water Act Section 319(h) grant to the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality.

TWRI is a unit of Texas A&M AgriLife Research that brings together expertise from across The Texas A&M University System
