DIMMITT – The Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service will conduct the planter clinic “From the Hitch Pin to the Closing Wheels” from 9 a.m.-3:30 p.m. March 11 at the Castro County Expo, 405 S.E. 4th St. in Dimmitt.

“The planter clinic is a key component in educating farmers on how to get their crop off to a strong start and help them achieve higher yields,” said Nancy Andersen, AgriLife Extension agent in Castro County.

“Our featured speaker will be Missy Bauer, an independent crop consultant with B&M Crop Consulting out of Coldwater, Michigan. She’s the Farm Journal associate field agronomist and coordinates the Farm Journal test plots in the eastern Corn Belt. She’s also an agronomist for Corn College TV, which airs on RFD-TV. I think she’ll have some very useful information to pass on for our growers.

“We’ll segway to resistant weeds, which are an ever increasing headache for farmers. Dr. Peter Dotray, Texas A&M AgriLife Research and Texas Tech weed scientist, and Adam Hixson with BASF Corporation, both of Lubbock, will address the issue.”

The clinic is free, including the noon meal, but an RSVP is required by March 9 as seating is limited. To RSVP or for more information, call the AgriLife Extension office in Castro County at 806-647-4115 or Ray Lee Equipment at 806-647-3324.

Clinic topics will include:

– How to Identify a Good Stand and Set Your Goals for Planting Execution.

– How to Evaluate the Soundness of Your Planter.

– How to Set Your Planter for the Best Performance Possible.

– How to Manage Weeds in a Resistance Situation.

– How to Optimize Your Crop Protection Levels with Innovative Technologies.

Three Texas Department of Agriculture continuing education units will be offered.
