Acuff appointed to national advisory committee

COLLEGE STATION – Dr. Gary Acuff, director of the Texas A&M Center for Food Safety in College Station, has been appointed as a new member of the National Advisory Committee on Microbiological Criteria for Foods.
The appointment was made recently by U.S. Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack.
The national committee provides scientific advice on public health issues related to the safety and wholesomeness of the U.S. food supply, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The committee assists in the development of microbiological criteria. It also reviews and evaluates epidemiological and risk assessment data and methodologies for assessing microbiological hazards.
“NACMCF members offer invaluable insights on food safety issues,” Vilsack said in a statement. “These individuals will be instrumental in protecting our nation’s food supply.”
Acuff will serve a two-year term on the committee. He directs activities at the Texas A&M food safety center, which is an interdisciplinary, collaborative effort revolving around food safety research, training and Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service activities.
Acuff received a bachelor’s of science degree in biology from Abilene Christian University and his master’s and doctorate in food science and technology, specializing in food microbiology, from Texas A&M University.
