Back-to-back sheep, goat events offer unique educational opportunity

SAN ANGELO – “Something for everybody interested in sheep and goat production” best describes dual educational events slated for Aug. 28-29 in San Angelo, organizers said.
“Committees planning both events have been tasked with providing information specific to the main trends we are seeing occur in today’s sheep and goat industry,” said Marvin Ensor, Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service regional program leader at San Angelo and a coordinator for both events.
The first of the two is the annual Sheep and Goat Field Day conducted by the Texas A&M AgriLife Research and Extension Center located just north of San Angelo. The field day starts with registration at 8 a.m. followed by the program from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Aug. 28.
The second event is the Texas Sheep and Goat Expo set from 2-8:30 p.m., also on Aug. 28, and again from 7 a.m.-4 p.m. Aug. 29 at the San Angelo Fairgrounds.
“The annual Sheep and Goat Field Day is a long-standing tradition of the AgriLife center generally set the first Thursday of September,” Ensor said. “But this year we’ve decided to combine both events as we hope to reach similar audiences.”
He said the programs will allow plenty of networking time among attendees, speakers and those involved with the trade show during lunch breaks, sheep dog demonstrations and a special chuck wagon breakfast set for 7 a.m. Aug. 29.
“It will be a fun, relaxed and informative two days filled with demonstrations and quite a bit of hands on type presentations,” he said. “We’re very proud of the concurrent breakout sessions as these will specifically target the major areas of today’s sheep and goat industry. Despite the flexible learning atmosphere, we are very adamant that those attending take home something to help them become better managers in their respective areas of production.”
The concurrent sessions cover the predominant wool breeds, hair sheep, club lamb production and meat goats.
Commercial businesses will exhibit new equipment, products and services throughout the two days.
“We are hopeful participants will first attend the center’s field day that touts work being conducted there, eat a great lunch on the center grounds and then move to the San Angelo Fairgrounds to take part in the expo for the remainder of that day and then again on Aug. 29,” Ensor said. “It will be a full two days, and is something we’ve not done here before, so we hope producers and potential producers will take full advantage of this unique opportunity.”
