COLLEGE STATION – Joe Pennington and Dan’l Mackey Almy have been inducted into the Texas A&M University department of agricultural economics Tyrus R. Timm Honor Registry.

The induction ceremony was held during a tailgate activity recently at the AgriLife Center on the Texas A&M campus prior to the Texas A&M-Ball State football game in College Station.

“We are extremely pleased to honor these individuals who have not only excelled professionally, but have exhibited leadership in both business and local communities,” said Dr. Parr Rosson, department head. “They exemplify what this registry is all about and reflect the core values of Texas A&M: excellence, integrity, leadership, loyalty, respect and selfless service.”

The Registry recognizes outstanding former students for meritorious accomplishments in their fields. It is the highest department-level honor and is named after Tyrus R. Timm, who led the university’s agricultural economics department from 1953 until 1973 during its rise to national prominence in teaching, research and extension.

Timm was known for his knowledge of finance and agricultural banking.

Pennington is a 1971 agricultural economics graduate. He was raised on a family farm in Raymondville where today he and his wife, Dorothea, manage and operate more than 11,000 acres. Crops include grain sorghum, cotton, corn sugarcane and sesame.

They also manage a cattle operation. Through the years, Pennington has volunteered in his community where he continues to give his time and financial support to the Willacy County 4-H and FFA programs. He is also an active donor to the Driscoll Children’s Foundation and the Presbyterian Children’s Home.

Currently, he serves as a board member of the Delta Lake Irrigation District, chairman of the Zone 1 Cotton Producers Advisory Committee for the Texas Department of Agriculture and as a board member for the Willacy County Co-op. He has been inducted into the Willacy Hall of Fame for the Willacy County Fair and Auction  and was named the 1986 Farmer of the Year by Cotton Farming Magazine.

She currently serves as the chair of the United Fresh Produce Association Nutrition & Health Council and on the  board of directors for the association. She also serves on the Produce Marketing Association’s Foundation for Industry Talent Campaign Committee and the YottaMark Inc. Advisory Board.
