AgriLife Extension names new cotton agronomist at Lubbock

LUBBOCK – Dr. Seth Byrd is the new Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service cotton agronomist at Lubbock.
Byrd started work Dec. 15 and is responsible for leading AgriLife Extension’s educational programming efforts in cotton production across the agency’s 20-county South Plains District. He is headquartered at the Texas A&M AgriLife Research and Extension Center, 1102 E. Farm-to-Market Road 1294, Lubbock.

Byrd recently completed studies to earn a doctorate in crop and soil science from the University of Georgia at Tifton. His dissertation was on management practices for cotton irrigation, quantifying potential productions risks of up-and-coming technologies and influence of leaf pubescence on defoliation of cotton. He also earned a master’s degree in agronomy from the University of Florida, Gainesville, and a bachelor’s in agronomy from North Carolina State University, Raleigh.
While completing his doctoral studies, Byrd served as a research assistant in the university’s department of crop and soil science. There he assisted with data collection and analysis on research projects regarding cotton irrigation scheduling, conservation tillage, herbicide drift injury, defoliation, cultivar evaluations and plant growth regulators.
He holds memberships in a number of associations including the Southern Weed Science Society, American Society of Agronomy, Crop Science Society of America and the Soil Science Society of America.
