Now is the time to plan for small grains planting
AgriLife Extension program in Brownwood offers decision-making help

BROWNWOOD – With small grains planting season fast approaching and deer season not far behind, the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service office in Brown County has set a Wheat, Oats, Deer Plot Workshop for 6 p.m. Aug. 11 in Brownwood.
The workshop will be held at the Brown County Fairgrounds located at 4206 U.S. Highway 377 South.
“We’re less than 60 days away from the time most of our producers plant wheat or oats, so it’s not too early to decide what to plant,” said Scott Anderson, AgriLife Extension agent in Brown County. “The majority of the wheat and oats planted in our area is used for livestock grazing and deer food plots.”
Experts will answer questions such as: Do you know which varieties produce the most forage for grazing or which varieties are more prone to disease? How about which varieties do livestock and deer prefer or are there other forage options?
“These questions and more will be answered during this program,” Anderson said.
The speakers, both AgriLife Extension specialists from San Angelo, are Dr. John Tomecek and Dr. David Drake. Tomecek, a wildlife specialist, will discuss deer food plots and forage plants to consider. Drake, an agronomist, will speak on wheat and oat forage production.
Anderson said the public is welcome to attend. Individual registration will be $10 due upon arrival.
Two Texas Department of Agriculture continuing education units in the integrated pest management category will be offered.
