Singh selected to receive Merriam Improved Irrigation Award

COLLEGE STATION – Dr. V.P. Singh has been selected as the 2016 recipient of the U.S. Society for Irrigation and Drainage Professionals Merriam Improved Irrigation Award.
He will receive the award during the society’s International Conference on Improving Irrigation Water Management Oct. 11-14 in Fort Collins, Colorado.
Singh is a distinguished professor of biological and agricultural engineering at Texas A&M University and holder of the Caroline and William N. Lehrer Distinguished Chair in Water Engineering.
“It’s an honor and a privilege to receive this award and serve this professional group for many years in a variety of ways – research, technology transfer and professional service,” Singh said. “This award has a special meaning because our department of biological and agricultural engineering has been known for several decades to have made a real impact on irrigation water management and this award is an indication of our department’s contribution in that area.”
According to the award nomination, it annually recognizes service to the irrigation, drainage, flood control or water resources management profession by an individual, organization or agency that has made meritorious contributions to the advancement, understanding or conduct of irrigation, drainage, flood control, water management or combination .
The award can be given to an individual, group, organization or agency for notable performance, years of distinguished service or specific actions that served to advance the study or implementation of irrigation, drainage, flood control or water resources management.
According to the award nomination, Singh’s contributions are in five areas: theory of surface irrigation, systems modeling of irrigation, infiltration modeling, evapotranspiration modeling and irrigation system planning and optimization.
Singh has been a member of the society for more than 30 years. According to the nomination, he has contributed to water literature in 25 textbooks, two solutions manuals, 59 edited books, 100 book chapters, 880 journal articles, 314 conference proceeding papers, 72 technical publications and reports, 13 edited journal issues and 34 book reviews. He also has more than 36,000 Google citations.
