AgriLife Extension sets Backyard Basics series in San Angelo

SAN ANGELO – Aspiring urban farmers can learn everything they need to get off to a good start at the upcoming Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service Backyard Basics series this May in San Angelo.
Allison Watkins, AgriLife Extension horticultural agent for Tom Green County, said all classes start at 6:30 p.m. at the Tom Green 4-H Center, 3168 N. U.S. Highway 67.
The sessions are:
— May 1, Vegetable Gardening.
— May 9, Aquaponics.
— May 15, Food Preservation.
— May 22, Fruit Trees.
Watkins said the seminars will provide the information and knowledge necessary to create a productive backyard garden and grow and store fresh food for the family.
“The series will emphasize food production on a small scale and show ways to grow food in an urban landscape,” she said. “You don’t have to live in the country or have a big plot of land to be productive and grow your own fresh fruit and vegetables,” she said. “The series will emphasize food production on a small scale and show ways to grow food in an urban landscape.”
Anyone interested can attend any or all four seminars, Watkins said. Individual registration is $10 each for the vegetable and fruit tree session and $20 for the food preservation session. All fees are due upon arrival. The aquaponics session is free.
Prospective attendees should RSVP by calling the AgriLife Extension office in Tom Green County at 325-659-6528 no later than the Friday prior to each program.
