Fort Worth workshop to review legal protections for landowners

FORT WORTH – A Sept. 29 workshop in Fort Worth will guide landowners through the legal aspects of protecting their property under a range of circumstances.

Conservation easements, estate tax planning, fencing law and condemnation strategy are all part of an agenda that includes speakers from the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service, Texas A&M University School of Law Program in Natural Resource Systems and Texas Land Conservancy.

The workshop takes place from 9:45 a.m. to 3:15 p.m. at the Texas A&M University School of Law, 1515 Commerce St., Fort Worth.

Event speaker Dr. John Tomeček, AgriLife Extension assistant professor and wildlife specialist, San Angelo, said the event will be especially useful for landowners, ranch realtors and other professionals who provide land management consultation. But the $10 workshop is open to anyone who wishes to attend.

“All landowners should be well versed on these important issues if they want to protect their property and its resources for future generations,” Tomeček said. “We want to make sure these folks are equipped with the information they need.”

The program agenda will be:

— 9:45 – 10 a.m. – Welcome: Tomeček, Mark Steinbach, executive director, Texas Land Conservancy.

— 10 – 11 a.m. – Conservation Easements and Estate Tax Benefits: Tools for Voluntary Land Conservation – Jim Bradbury, attorney.

— 11 a.m. – noon – Fence Laws in Texas and Landowner Liability: Kyle Weldon and Jordan Hayes, law students.

— Noon – 1 p.m. – Lunch.

— 1– 1:30 p.m. – Partnering for Conservation: A Landowner Perspective – Chuck Snakard, landowner, Chalk Mountain Ranch, Somervell County.

— 1:30 – 2:30 p.m. – Condemnation Strategies and Solutions: How to Protect Your Property- Luke Ellis, attorney.

— 2:30 – 3:15 p.m. – Question and answer session with all presenters.
