QUITMAN – Shaniqua Davis, Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service agriculture and natural resources agent in Upshur County, has been approved by the Wood County Commissioners Court to join the AgriLife Extension office in Quitman.

Her first day in Wood County will be May 1.

Davis has been an agriculture and natural resources agent in Upshur County for three and a half years.

Shelia Harris, AgriLife Extension district administrator, Overton, said Davis will make a good addition to the AgriLife Extension staff in Wood County.

“She has established an excellent agriculture and natural resource program as well as grown the 4-H program in Upshur County,” Harris said. “All of these successes will follow her to Wood County.”

Davis graduated with a bachelor’s degree in animal science and a master’s degree in international agriculture, both from Oklahoma State University in Stillwater.

Davis has coordinated the Upshur County 4-H program and hopes to build on well established 4-H initiatives as well as the county’s Master Garden programs in Wood County.

“The Master Gardener program will be an opportunity for me to learn as I help residents progress through the course,” she said. “They have a great program, and I’m hoping to help improve it where we can.”

Davis implemented a new Women Landowners program in Upshur County, which provided educational initiatives in pond management, cattle nutrition, livestock vaccination, herbicide updates, winter pasture and U.S. Department of Agriculture – Natural Resources Conservation Service grants.

“I plan to start a Women Landowners program in Wood County to teach aspects of land ownership and agricultural opportunities,” she said. “The response in Upshur County was very positive, and I think we reached a lot of women landowners who might have otherwise felt uncomfortable attending or seeking information they need or want.”
