AgriLife Extension sets multi-county Grazing and Nutrition Workshop in Sonora

SONORA – The Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service will conduct the multi-county Grazing and Nutrition Workshop beginning at 8:30 a.m. Aug. 29 at the Sutton County Civic Center, 1700 N. Crockett Ave. in Sonora.
The event is being offered by the AgriLife Extension offices in Sutton, Edwards and Crockett counties, said Pascual Hernandez, AgriLife Extension agent in Sutton County.
Cost is $15 per person by Aug. 24 and $25 thereafter. The fee covers program materials, morning refreshments and lunch. Call the AgriLife Extension office in Sutton County at 325-387-3101 to register and for more information.
“When it’s dry, we either feed or sell livestock,” Hernandez said. “Either way, questions remain about the carrying capacity of our rangeland or if we’re meeting the nutritional and mineral needs of those livestock. Our goal for this program is to answer those questions with factual, solid, science-based information.”
Topics and speakers will include:
— Assessing Range Condition and Carrying Capacity, Dr. Bob Lyons, AgriLife Extension range specialist, Uvalde.
— Understanding Livestock Nutrition and Mineral Needs, Dr. Tim Turner, veterinarian, Southwestern Livestock Mineral, San Angelo.
— Solar Powered Watering Systems, Ronnie Sauer, Southwest Texas Solar, Eldorado.
— Herbicide Product Lineup, Jordan Symon, Dow Range and Pasture specialist, Abilene.
— Fecal Parasite Sampling Study, Dr. Doug Tolleson, rangeland scientist, Texas A&M AgriLife Research Station at Sonora.
Three Texas Department of Agriculture continuing education units, one integrated pest management and two general, will be offered.
